From Capability to Calling

How many opportunities have we postponed while waiting for clarity?

In my recent interview with Christina Joy Whittaker, she offered an idea that has me re-thinking the way I'll approach change and growth going forward. For too long, I believed I needed clarity first, before I could solve for x. And, wow, that’s paralyzing. I now believe I had it wrong.

My conversation with Christina helped me see that clarity comes after you get in motion. Maybe you’ve had times when you thought clarity had to come first too. Waiting for certainty, I now believe, is a losing game. When we wait, we do it at the expense of expansion, vitality and growth. When we abandon the waiting and choose movement instead, that is what leads to and even makes clarity manifest. You know the sayings — the ones that remind us we only need enough light for the next faithful step.

I wonder how many paintings, businesses, books, careers and relationships began that way—not with certainty or clarity, but with motion and courage.

I no longer believe clarity is the prerequisite. Now I see it's possibly the beneficent bestie that shows up once we're already courageously in motion. Clarity joins to run the race with you, makes you faster, energizes you and makes you unstoppable.
